I’ve grown up watching TV all the time, which I guess made me become a somewhat awkward person due to the fact that I’d rather stay at home all day. But I’ve never been ashamed of it since it gave me loads of benefits.
Being part of the 90’s generation, (and I dare say it’s the best generation right fellas *wink*) with Bill Nye the Science Guy, TMNT, Power Rangers, and etc. filling our televisions, one channel stands out that most which contributed to my love for music - MTV. Growing up watching Donita Rose and Utt Panichkul making fun of each other, doing crazy things, and featuring cool stuff made me say “I want to become a VJ!” I remember dedicating hours after school just to create an artistic mail for their segment Request of the Day and asking my dad to mail them (back in the days, mails to be sent via package abroad are costly and I remember my Dad telling me to give him money for the shipping, but still ended up with him paying for them, hehehe).
After doing school stuff I would always tune it to MTV to check whether Donita or Utt have already read my request, and also be updated with the latest songs of different artists. Unfortunately, my mail was never read, but hey, all smiles since I get to watch their episodes:)
So, years have passed, The Philippines had its own MTV. VJs KC Montero, Giselle Toengi, Sara Meier, Marc Abaya, Maggie Wilson, and etc. ruled the channel that then made me more inspired of being a VJ. The channel had its ups and downs and is now returning with a vengeance. Naming it as MTV Pinoy with new breeds of VJs Sam, Josh, Andre, Yassi, and Shy, they’re on the hunt for their 6th and 7th member. I, for all Pete’s sake, did not miss this opportunity.
They’ve had different legs of the VJ Hunt across The Philippines. They’re second to the last was held in Glorietta last July 20. I asked my family to be with me for support (like what I’ve said, I’m an awkward person and this is my first time to audition for anything).
So I filled up the registration form and was the 96th candidate. There were lots of aspiring VJs like me and I got intimidated really quick, that even writing my name made my mind go blank. Never the less, being the tough chick, I courageously finished it and waited for instructions.
The Glorietta Activity Center was filled with different sponsored booths, cameras, and of course people from MTV. I was able to catch this one doing a sample shot for MTV.
Here’s the magic booth were all the candidates would have to show their VJ-ing skills.
Fellow candidates waiting for their turn.
So being the friendly me (also being talkative hehehe) I was able to gain a friend by the name of Jean. We had loads of conversations to kill the time since I’m 96th and she’s 98th. I remember she asked a funny question if I’m a pure Filipino or not. I was never asked like that before, but to answer her question, I’m part Chinese, Spanish, and Filipino. In short, halo-halo! HAHAHA :))
Games were played on stage hosted by the four VJs and performances from Up Dharma Down and Yolanda Moon.
While waiting for our turn, VJ Yassi was doing her thing. God she’s so pretty and bubbly!
Here’s VJ Sam arriving at the venue. I think this one is my paparazzi-type shot of her. Hehehe :))
VJ Andre was mobbed by fans upon getting down from the stage, but my mom had ninja skills so she was able to get a photo with him.
After hours of waiting, it’s now my turn to show what I can bring to become the next MTV Pinoy VJ. So inside I have to stare at this mirror thing-y where the script I have to say is being flashed. I’m used on hosting some events so reading a script and doing impromptu is not new to me. I did my best (of course) and I think because of that, a guy from the booth asked me if I was a former Radio Announcer! (well, honestly I’d also like to become a DJ but VJ-ing is better, HAHAHA)
So after my turn, we had to run to another mall in the south for a birthday dinner. I said goodbye to Jean and exchanged numbers to keep in touch. I must say I love the experience! And I wish I’ll be one of the finalists or even, be the next MTV Pinoy VJ!
The last leg of the MTV Pinoy VJ Hunt will be this August 3 at Trinoma. If you have what it takes to become the next MTV Pinoy VJ, then bring it!
Follow and support MTV Pinoy !
